BACKGROUND
Melissa Finelli: I’ve spent many years foraging my path as an artist. Drawing, painting, printmaking, illustration, ceramics… I was in search of a medium that would endlessly challenge me. It wasn’t until I was introduced to working with metal that I found my match! I studied jewelry making at North Bennett Street School and sculpture at Museum School in Boston. My work is a balance between the two. Sculptural, on an intimate scale.

PROCESS
The process of working with metal is such a delight! The focus repetitive part making gives me, the physicality of swinging the hammer. I love my hammers, and I love my anvil even more… The actual forming and moving the material is ever so satisfying.
My process is spontaneous. I don’t plan, or draw out my idea. I am always in motion in the studio, letting one thing lead to another. In this constant state of motion, I am in thought putting the pieces of the idea together. Most often I don’t know what the piece will become until the very last moment.

INSPIRATION
Everything around me is a potential source of inspiration.
Walks along the city streets, gardening (which I love!), sounds, people, space, architecture, grass growing out of cracks in the concrete, landscape, even furry cats. So many thing are curious to me. They jumble up in my mind and manifest themselves into my work.

STYLE
My artistic style is organic, futuristic, playful and bold. Sometimes with a little touch of attitude… Most often a little of each.
