Canadian artist Monika Urbaniak's current work explores a theme of memory and how past grievances affect individuals. She has created pieces expressing the idea of holding and letting go of grudges. A grudge can be messy, confusing and uncomfortable. She works with fiber, thread and enamel to mimic the entanglement of past and present through texture and imagery. All pieces speak to what has been unarticulated and unexplained. The brooches use found objects on their backs, such as a dog button - dogs don’t hold grudges and always forgive - or wooden star buttons that refer to letting go of animosities, which in turn helps us sleep well at night. The button stands for closure when the forgiveness takes place. The enameled earrings play with the idea of mixed emotions.
Materials: Copper, Cotton, Beads, Thread, Found Buttons, Sterling Silver
Size: Approximately 1.75" in length and 1.25" in width
