American artist Cloris Ding's work for Things Unsaid examines how untamed hair has long been viewed as intolerable, failing, and inconsistent with the long-existing societal doctrine from which beauty has been narrowly defined and relentlessly policed. Rooted in historic standards, this doctrine has dismissed women's hair's natural textures and nonconforming styles as unruly, unprofessional, or even defiant. "You should brush your tangled hair," "Brush your hair, knots are there," etc. have usually been told to a young girl as they grow up.
A knot can be a tool for measurement, a recorder of a milestone, a motif of the meaningful. Knots mirror the journey of womanhood-marked by pressure, pulled by expectations, twisted by imposed ideals, yet holding firm, refusing to unravel. What was once seen as messy is now understood as beautiful. Not in spite of its complexity, but because of it.
